Fans of Broadway are in for a standout season as the University Concert Series brings a lineup packed with Tony Award-winning productions, nostalgic favorites and powerhouse vocal performances to Columbia.
Leading the season is the nine-time Tony Award®-winning Best Musical, The Book of Mormon. The New York Times calls it “the best musical of this century.” The Washington Post says, “It is the kind of evening that restores your faith in musicals.” And Entertainment Weekly says, “Grade A: the funniest musical of all time.” Jimmy Fallon of The Tonight Show calls it “Genius. Brilliant. Phenomenal.”
Audiences craving romance and ‘80s nostalgia can look forward to Mystic Pizza, a musical stage adaptation inspired by the beloved cult-classic film. Featuring chart-topping hits like “Girls Just Want to Have Fun,” “Never Gonna Give You Up,” and “Take My Breath Away!” this musical brings small-town charm and big emotions to the stage.
Also joining the season is Hadestown, winner of eight 2019 Tony® Awards including Best Musical and the 2020 Grammy® Award for Best Musical Theater Album, this acclaimed new show from celebrated singer-songwriter Anaïs Mitchell and original director Rachel Chavkin is a love story for today… and always. Intertwining two mythic tales — that of young dreamers Orpheus and Eurydice, and that of King Hades and his wife Persephone.
Rounding out the musical offerings is The Broadway Boys, a collection of diverse male voices from the New York stage. Representing shows such as HAMILTON, WICKED, JERSEY BOYS, THE LION KING, THE BOOK OF MORMON, MJ THE MUSICAL, LES MISERABLES, MAMMA MIA, HADESTOWN, and many more. The Boys rearrange traditional musical theater tunes with elements of pop, funk, gospel and rock for an exciting new take on Broadways’ greatest hits.
